Moving Docs announced

May 2015 to March 2016, around Europe

Moving Docs is a new EDN initiative supported by Creative Europe. Its aim is to create innovative outreach strategies and provide opportunities for urban and rural European audiences to enjoy regular screenings of documentary films through a wide variety of media and platforms.

Moving Docs is a partnership founded for the simultaneous distribution of documentaries across Europe. Through the joint action of eight pioneering and successful partners across Europe including: CineDoc (Greece), DocLounge (Sweden), DocsBarcelona-The Documentary of the Month 40 (Spain and South America), APORDOC (Portugal), DocIt (Italy), Lemessos International Documentary Festival (Cyprus), Planete Doc (Poland) and the Scottish Documentary Institute (UK), Moving Docs will create a common marketing and distribution strategy to enable and facilitate the pan-European release of documentaries.

What

Moving Docs will screen films that have the ability to engage and connect, transform our lives, and help bring about social change.

Five documentaries will be screened across Europe by all partners, via a maximum of venues and platforms.

Strategy

Taking place in multiple locations across Europe, the screenings will engage audiences through issues and themes relevant to our contemporary lives.

A pan–European campaign will be built around the distribution of the films selected for joint distribution by Moving Docs, and the screenings will be linked to European & International Days, strengthening the creation of a unified European marketing campaign around each film. These unique European media moments will enable the creation of flagship screenings and maximise outreach by including partnerships with ngo’s, institutions, film boards, etc.

Film eligibility

In order for a documentary to be eligible for Moving Docs it has to be European and match the following criteria:

  • Feature length
  • Just completed or in a rough cut stage (films must be ready by June 30th 2015 at the latest)
  • Have a strong outreach potential
  • Focus on culture, environment, politics, climate change, as well as general human and social stories with a pan-European relevance
  • Be in English or with English subtitles.

Films are considered European if:

  • the work has been majority produced by a producer or producers established in the countries participating in the MEDIA Sub-programme.
  • to be considered as the actual producers the production companies must be credited as such. Other elements such as creative control, ownership of exploitation rights and share of profits may also be taken into account to determine who the actual producer is.
  • the work must be produced with the significant participation of professionals who are nationals/residents of countries participating in the MEDIA Sub-programme.
  • European films will be considered as national in that country or territory participating in the MEDIA Sub-programme whose citizens / residents have participated in the highest proportion in the making of the film. They will be considered as non-national in all the other territories.

Call for films

Moving Docs is calling for films which take on issues relevant to our contemporary lives.

The films will be screened across a variety of media platforms and countries, and will focus on culture, environment, politics, climate change, as well as general human and social stories.

Projects selected for the new Moving Docs initiative will benefit from a minimum guarantee, pre-sales, theatrical, non-theatrical, community and educational screenings across Europe, in addition to becoming eligible for the Moving Docs-EDN award for most-watched European documentary.

Screenings will take place from May 2015 to March 2016.

The films selected for Moving Docs will:

  • enjoy a pan-European release, across leading festivals, screening venues, cinemas, enjoying a potential audience of more than one million people
  • benefit from working with leading distribution and marketing professionals from across Europe
  • receive a minimum guarantee
  • participate in the creation of a pan-European Marketing strategy
  • be eligible for the Moving Docs award for the most-watched European documentary.

The deadline for submitting your documentary to Moving Docs is January 6, 2015, but we welcome earlier submission of films.

Filmmakers from Europe can submit an application and films must be European and come from countries participating in the MEDIA sub-programme.

Films with strong and viable outreach ideas are preferred. Five films will be selected. The working language is English. Films must be ready by June 30th 2015 at the latest and must be at the stage of a rough cut by the submission deadline.
